McKnight counted off thirty seconds and pulled the door open a tiny crack. He saw Merrie walking toward the elevator lobby. He waited until he heard the elevator arrive and leave again. He let the door close, leaned against the wall and closed his eyes.

He thought of the gear and technology in his pockets and satchel. If they searched or scanned him, he would be in big trouble. What else can I screw up tonight?

He shook his head, stepped to the washbasin and turned the cold water on full blast. He plunged his hands under the stream and splashed it up into his face. His reflection in the mirror didn’t look it, but he felt disoriented. He had time. He would stay in the bathroom for five minutes before venturing out.
